I know you know you should be showing up on video, but is there something holding you back? Maybe it feels awkward and overwhelming, or you just don’t know where to start.
Trust me, I understand. But the fact is: video builds trust faster than almost any other medium. If you want to elevate your visibility, authority, and connection with your audience, you can’t afford to keep avoiding the camera.
Let’s simplify it. Here’s how to build a video strategy that works for you.
Start With a Plan
You don’t need a content calendar for every day of the year, but you do need a focused approach. Don’t try to do everything with your video strategy all at once.
Start with 3 to 5 core topics you know inside and out. No matter your industry or your expertise, I’ve put together a list of prompts to get you started. Think about:
- Common mistakes in your industry
- FAQs your clients always ask
- Things you wish more people understood
- Timely commentary on current events or trends
Take those big ideas and break them down into smaller ones. You’ll quickly find you have 20+ ideas to start recording.
And if you’re stuck? Look at your most-read blog posts or top-performing emails. Repurpose them into video scripts.
Short Form vs. Long Form: Know the Difference
Short-form content, like Instagram Reels, TikToks, or YouTube Shorts, is designed to interrupt boredom. People are scrolling. You have three seconds to grab their attention.
Long-form content, like YouTube videos or embedded website content, is educational. People search for it. They’re already invested.
Both are valuable. The trick is to know what you’re making and where you’re sharing it before you hit record.
Match the Format to the Platform
This is one of the biggest mistakes I see: posting horizontal videos on vertical platforms or vice versa.
- Vertical = Reels, TikTok, Shorts
- Horizontal = YouTube, LinkedIn, Website
Think of it like framing a picture. You wouldn’t shove a landscape photo into a square frame. Respect the platform’s format, and your content will look instantly more polished.
Repurpose. Reuse. Repeat.
One piece of content shouldn’t live just once. That’s marketing waste.
Here’s how to repurpose smarter:
- Slice long videos into short clips
- Re-share older videos with a new caption or hook
- Record a new version of an older idea with an updated point of view
- Turn blog posts, podcasts, or workshops into on-camera content
You don’t need more ideas. You need more formats of your best content.
Use Hooks, Captions & Keywords
Want people to actually watch your videos? Use these three elements every time:
- Hook – Grab their attention in the first two to three seconds. Ask a question. Make a bold statement. Start moving.
- Captions – Most people scroll with sound off. Don’t make them guess what you’re saying.
- Keywords – Speak the words people search for. Add them to your captions, screen text, and titles.
Bonus: all three of these tips help your SEO. Google loves video. So does your audience.
Google It Like a Pro
Go to Google and type in your topic, for example, how to lead a team, then check the “people also ask” section. That’s your content goldmine.
Every question people are asking is a video opportunity waiting for your perspective. Answer them. Record it. Post it. Build trust.
Done Is Better Than Perfect
There’s a time and place for professional video…but there’s also a time for just grabbing your phone and hitting record. Social content doesn’t need to be glossy. In fact, your audience craves real more than perfect.
Yes, lighting matters. Yes, filters are fine (I love my Zoom beauty filter). And yes, you’ll probably hate your first few videos. Do them anyway. It’s a muscle you need to build.
And, if you’re still feeling camera-shy after all of these tips, try this: record one video a day for a week. You don’t even have to post them. With each take, you’ll get better, faster, and more natural.
Before long, you’ll feel comfortable and confident in your ability to create great video content and wonder why you waited so long to start.
