Ask Lisa – Advice for Someone Moving from a Full-time Job to Self-Employed

Q: What advice do you have for someone who is working full-time but is in the planning stages of becoming self-employed?

Lisa Larter ConnectionsA:  The most important thing is to focus on relationship building with the right people. This will make it much easier when you launch your business because those people will have a stronger desire to support you.

Use chat and communicate on other Pages that your ideal client already frequents so they get to know you. Try and help people and become known this way.

  1. THE most important thing is to have some work lined up BEFORE you leave. Yes, build relationships etc but before you take the jump make sure you have some hard and fast business lined up, no matter how small, to get the ball rolling. Otherwise its very hard to spend the first few months trying to get started. And remember CASH FLOW is your greatest enemy. Always keep an eye several months ahead and always assume that everyone will pay at least a month later than you want them to AT LEAST. Other than that working for your self is brilliant! Good luck!

    1. Excellent advice. I agree completely with the cash flow part and most people don’t understand it at all. It was the number one challenge I had at my store the first year of business. Thanks for the comment!
