There is more than one way to make more money in your business. Most people would tell you to focus on growth, but not everyone wants to grow.
What if you want a right-size business, one that pays you well, allows you to set money aside for the future, and gives you time to enjoy your life with the people you love?
If that resonates with you then following the traditional path of getting bigger every year may be a myth you can let go of.
What if, instead, you focused on getting better? What if you got clear on exactly what you wanted from your business and then got busy providing what your customers need for you to get those outcomes.
A bigger business does not always equal more profit. There is a cost to growth; more people, more tools, more technology, more customers to support… more, more, more.
But what if you could instead focus on getting better with the same-sized team (or smaller) and the same number of clients? How might that feel?
It’s possible to do if you’re brave enough to consider how you might raise prices without raising costs. If you’re brave enough to consider how to systematize some of what you do so you don’t need as many resources. If you’re prudent enough to stop spending money on things that don’t generate a positive return in your business.
There are many ways to run a business and have that business provide value to you, the owner, your team, and your clients.
Top-line revenue growth isn’t always the answer. As my favorite author, Keith Cunningham, says, “Your business is not a bathrobe; there is no one size fits all,” and… “when it comes to growth, you never want to grow a tumor.”
Focus on being better where you are right now, eliminate the tumors that are making your business unhealthy. Then when you decide to grow, you can go slow and keep things sane and profitable.
