I’ve been coaching, mentoring, and advising business owners since 2008. Anytime someone runs into problems, I turn them back to the basics.
The basics are boring, and they work. They are the things you need to show up and do consistently in your business day after day, week after week, and year after year.
In fact, some of these things you’ll become so bored of doing that you’ll stop. You’ll either stop doing the work or stop inspecting what you expect, and that’s when things go off track.
Here’s the fundamental list of basics you need to adhere to:
- Be consistent in your marketing every single day. Marketing is what drives visibility and lead generation. Without new leads, your business will dry up and die.
- Be consistent in your follow-up. Don’t let potential new clients wait, and definitely don’t delay responding to paying clients.
- Get your invoicing sent out promptly, and pay your own bills on time.
- Get your bookkeeping done every single month, and review your monthly financials to find ways to improve. Don’t stick your head in the sand to avoid the numbers because you don’t like what you see.
- File your taxes every year and make your payments and/or installments on time, too.
- Invest in relationships, pick up the phone, and communicate with at least one customer and/or past customers each week.
- Deeply consider how you can provide your customers with value and then do it. Every day, ask yourself, “How can I help the people I serve?”
Don’t let a successful business give you a false sense of security. Be as engaged in keeping your business strong as you were when you started. Do all the things, all the time, and you just may build something that can last a lifetime.
