Maybe I am blind, but I’ve never noticed a pitcher do this before. At first, I thought it was a one off, but then it kept happening.
The Dodgers’ pitcher would pull a small little card out of their pocket, they’d discreetly hold it in their glove while they were reading whatever it said, and then just as fast, put it away.
What on earth was this? Was it an affirmation card or a cheat sheet?
That little card (and it’s important) is a pitching and defensive alignment card, basically their cheat sheet on how the players play.
Modern baseball is heavy on analytics. Each batter has a massive amount of data about what pitches they hit well or poorly and where they tend to put the ball in play.
Pitchers store this information on the defensive alignment card.
Essentially they get to remind themselves of things like this:
- Batter tendencies: Where each hitter usually hits the ball
- Pitching plan: How to pitch to each batter, and a reminder of what pitches to throw in certain counts.
- Defensive positioning: Where fielders should be for each batter based on analytics.
- Signs / pitch-calling codes: Sometimes it includes reminders for how the catcher and pitcher communicate signals, especially with PitchCom (the device they use to call pitches).
I was blown away when I found this out. These pitchers don’t commit all of this to memory? They have a cheat sheet to help them out?
Interesting…
Modern business is a lot about analytics, too.
So how do you plan on creating that cheat sheet to keep tucked behind your glove? What are you doing to start showing up in LLM responses like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude work for you instead of keeping you invisible?
